Recipe Review: Lemon Blueberry Dutch Baby Skillet Bake & Some Fiction

The recipe used in this review is by Alexandra’s Kitchen.

What do you do when you buy a whole bunch of blueberries and cannot eat them quickly enough?

I usually end up putting them in some oatmeal, paring them with some cottage cheese, or shoving a few handfuls down my throat – you know, that is the normal thing to do with them, right?

My partner and I are pretty regular with our sharing of Facebook Reels and TikTok videos (me more than him; he doesn’t even use TT – weird, right??), and this was a blueberry recipe he had tossed my way over the summer, and I knew the combination of blueberry and lemon was going to be a win. I know this because I have made a few blueberry and lemon desserts – allow me to share them with you.

PS – Please be kind. I am still dusting off this website (Achoooo!) and changing over all of the old YUMeating logos since I sold that brand during Covid.

Okay, now that we have all that out of the way – let’s talk about this skillet-bake thing.

Lemon Blueberry Dutch Baby Skillet Recipe Review

Ingredients: The ingredient list was simple and easy to follow. I was pleasantly surprised by the use of fresh lemon zest, as it gave the dish a vibrant, citrusy aroma that teased our senses as it baked.

My Notes: Blueberries, you will need them.  Alexandra’s recipe called for whole or 2% milk, but I can tell you I used Skim, and it worked fine. Typically, we drink almond milk, but there are just some recipes in which we cannot use almond milk. I did not even want to try that with this recipe. We used sugar in the raw for our sugar, added about ¼ cup more blueberries than her recipe, added a bit more lemon zest, and omitted the powdered sugar. I have to maintain my weight loss, so it is good for me to skip some things like that. And, honestly, I did not miss it.

Preparation: Preparing the batter was a breeze. It came together quickly, incorporating lemon juice and blueberries into the mix, creating a visually appealing, speckled texture.

Baking: The magic happened in the oven. The smell was utterly irresistible as the Dutch Baby Skillet Bake began to rise and turn golden brown. The kitchen was filled with the aroma of fresh lemon and warm blueberries, which made it difficult to wait for it to finish baking.

Texture: The texture was perfect – slightly crispy on the edges and wonderfully fluffy in the middle – even though it does flatten a bit, it is still fluffy. It had a tender, pancake-like quality with a delightful contrast from the bursts of blueberry goodness.

Taste: This is where the dish truly shines. The lemon-infused Dutch Baby had a zesty and slightly tangy flavor, perfectly complementing the sweet bursts of blueberry. The balance between tart and sweet was spot on.

My partner decided to drizzle maple syrup over his slice, adding an extra layer of decadence.

Presentation: As recommended, I served the Dutch Baby straight from the skillet. It had a rustic charm that added to the overall experience— the contrast of the golden-brown pancake against the dark, seasoned skillet made for a beautiful presentation.

Verdict: The Lemon Blueberry Dutch Baby Skillet Bake is a culinary masterpiece that combines the brightness of citrus and the sweetness of blueberries in a way that feels indulgent yet refreshing. It’s a versatile dish that can be served for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. My partner and I agreed that it’s a keeper.

I highly recommend this recipe to anyone looking to add a burst of sunshine to their plate. It’s simple, delightful, and a crowd-pleaser in every sense.

I give this 5 out of 5 stars and would definitely make it again.

Grab your snacks and settle in because now it’s time to read a little short story I’ve written. I hope you are enjoying this addition to my blog. It has been nice to dust this thing off a little while getting back to my writing – both blogging and fiction writing.

Story Time!

A Taste of Togetherness

The sun crept over the horizon, casting a golden glow through the kitchen window. Sarah stood there, a mischievous smile tugging at her lips as she prepared breakfast. The scent of fresh lemon zest and blueberries filled the air. She was making her famous Lemon Blueberry Dutch Baby Skillet Bake, a treat reserved for special occasions.

Today was special indeed. It was her daughter Emma’s 10th birthday, and they had decided to celebrate it with a cozy family breakfast. Sarah’s husband, Mark, had just entered the kitchen, rubbing his eyes and smiling at the delightful aroma that had roused him from sleep.

“Good morning, sleepyhead,” Sarah greeted him with a kiss on the cheek.

Mark grinned. “Good morning to you, too. Is that what I think it is?”

Sarah nodded. “The birthday girl requested her favorite breakfast.”

Just then, Emma bounded into the kitchen with her tousled hair and pajamas adorned with unicorns. Her eyes widened as she saw the skillet in the oven, a mixture of excitement and anticipation in her gaze.

“Mom, you made it!” Emma exclaimed, rushing to give her mother a tight hug.

Mark joined the embrace, and the three of them stood there, wrapped in a moment of love and togetherness.

As Sarah carefully removed the skillet from the oven, a collective gasp of appreciation filled the kitchen. The Dutch Baby had risen to perfection, its edges golden and crisp, and the blueberries had burst into pockets of sweet, syrupy goodness. The fresh lemon zest glistened on the surface like little drops of sunshine.

They placed the skillet on the table, and Sarah cut the Dutch Baby into generous slices. Emma’s eyes sparkled as she watched her mother work her culinary magic. She was the first to take a bite, and her face lit up with delight.

“It’s amazing, Mom!” Emma exclaimed, her mouth full of the lemony, berry-filled goodness.

Mark followed suit, savoring each bite as if it were the most delicious thing he had ever tasted. “You’ve outdone yourself, Sarah. This is incredible.”

As they enjoyed their breakfast, the conversation flowed effortlessly. Emma shared stories from school, Mark talked about his latest project at work, and Sarah listened, her heart swelling with love for her family.

With each bite they took, the Dutch Baby became more than just a breakfast dish; it became a symbol of their bond, a reminder of the simple joys of sharing a meal with the people they loved most in the world.

As they finished their meal, Emma looked at her parents with gratitude in her eyes. “Thank you for making this day special,” she said, her voice soft and heartfelt.

Mark and Sarah exchanged a knowing glance, and Mark replied, “Sweetheart, every day with you is special. And this,” he gestured to the now-empty skillet, “this is just the icing on the cake.”

They laughed together, a family brought even closer by a simple, homemade breakfast that had become a cherished memory. The Lemon Blueberry Dutch Baby Skillet Bake had filled their stomachs and hearts, leaving them with a taste of togetherness that would linger long after the last bite was gone.
