Recipe Review: Exploring the Magic of Michael Symon’s Pork Meatballs in Sauerkraut (with some short story fiction!)

Sometimes, you just make these recipes, take a few pictures, and then POOF! All has been forgotten. It has been a while since I made this recipe and I want to make it again. That is when I told myself I should probably write my review before I do that. While my pictures are not that great because my days of food photography are long over and now I am just doing this for fun, this was one of the best Michael Symon recipes I have made.

For anyone who has been around this space for a while, you know a lot of my food posts come from the brand I sold, YUMeating, and they were merged here. On my 40th birthday my ex-husband and I got to go to Symon’s restaurant in Detroit called Roast. Sadly, Roast closed down a few years ago which makes me really sad as I have told my current partner about it so many times – those amazing bone marrow appetizers – that I am sure he’s over it. (Truth be told, I have stopped talking about it.)

Over the last few years Michael has created a few cookbooks on health and wellness, showcasing his better health and weight loss. One night, my partner was scrolling the book of faces and found a reel of Symon preparing these amazing pork meatballs in sauerkraut. I searched high and low for that recipe; someone’s YouTube video was the closest I could come. That meant I would have to hunt down the cookbook this recipe was in, and I did – “Simply Simon Suppers.” I love a good cookbook but I despise buying them online without being able to look at them first.

Okay, enough about me. Let’s get started, shall we?

Recipe Review

Now, let’s turn our attention to the star of the show: Pork Meatballs in Sauerkraut. This recipe is a testament to Symon’s ability to transform humble ingredients into culinary masterpieces.

My Thoughts

The Pork Meatballs in Sauerkraut exceeded all expectations. The meatballs were juicy and flavorful, with the perfect balance of spices. The sauerkraut added a tangy punch that complemented the richness of the pork beautifully. Adding apples and apple cider vinegar seemed weird initially, but it amazed me. Overall, this recipe is a testament to Symon’s culinary prowess and ability to create both comforting and sophisticated dishes.

If you grab the cookbook you will see that there are some sides he creates to pair with this recipe. I didn’t make those. Instead, I made some smashed potatoes and cornbread. As for the Sauerkraut, if you can find it make sure to grab what he recommends – Cleveland Kraut – as you will not be sorry to spend the extra few dollars compared to the other brands of bagged, canned, or jars. Trust me, while many of those are amazing, and I have tried almost all of them – this stuff is banging. He used the Gnar Gnar in his recipe. We could not find that here so we used the Roasted Garlic and, yeah, the best.

Don’t Wait! Make These Pork Meatballs RIGHT NOW!

Michael Symon’s Pork Meatballs in Sauerkraut is a culinary masterpiece that showcases the chef’s talent and creativity. Paired with his cookbook, “Simply Symon Suppers,” this recipe is just one example of the culinary delights awaiting home cooks. Short Story Fiction: A Granddaughter’s Love

As the early morning sunlight filtered through the kitchen window, Sarah stood amidst a whirlwind of flour and spices. Today was special—it was her grandmother’s birthday, and Sarah was determined to honor her memory in the best way she knew how: through food.

With a worn, dog-eared copy of Michael Symon’s “Simply Symon Suppers” propped open on the counter, Sarah set to work on her grandmother’s favorite dish: Pork Meatballs in Sauerkraut. The aroma of sizzling pork and fragrant spices filled the air, mingling with the memories of laughter and love that always surrounded her grandmother’s kitchen.

As the meatballs browned to perfection, Sarah’s mind wandered back to cherished moments spent with her grandmother—learning to knead dough for homemade bread and listening to tales of family history passed down through generations.

With a gentle simmer, the sauerkraut softened and melded with the savory meatballs, infusing the kitchen with a comforting warmth that echoed the love and tradition of her grandmother’s cooking.

As Sarah plated the dish and garnished it with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of fresh parsley, she couldn’t help but smile. In that moment, she felt her grandmother’s presence, guiding her hand and blessing the meal with her timeless wisdom and boundless love.

With each bite of tender pork and tangy sauerkraut, Sarah felt a sense of connection and belonging that transcended time and space. In that simple dish, she found solace, joy, and the enduring legacy of her grandmother’s love—a recipe for happiness that would live on in her heart forever.
