Balancing Nutrition & Food Blogging

balance

How do you like the new photo? I thought it would help if I added a title so that all the photos looked different and maybe stood out a little bit.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue with NaBloPoMo as I have been having a difficult time in life and when I am faced with life altering decisions and death, it tends to push me backwards. I tried really hard to push through my words and get my posts done, but it had proven to be difficult.

But, I hate quitting. So I am going to keep pushing forward.

How do you balance good nutrition and good taste?

I don’t.

I try.

But I seem to be failing.  When you read a food blog you see all these great recipes. They either fit your lifestyle, or they don’t. If they don’t, sometimes someone will try to change them to fit within their way of eating.

For a long time I was doing that on my old website, More to Life than Chocolate. When I started YUM, I moved some of those posts here. As I started to work through some recipes here on YUM, I really had no idea what direction I wanted to take it in. I just knew that I wanted to make things as simple as possible without breaking that budget and relying on a lot of prepackaged foods. I wont lie to you, we do have some prepackaged foods in the cabinets in the forms of pasta, rice, and cereal. Cereal is not a staple and neither is the mac and cheese or pasta salad we might have once in a while. My cabinets are also cluttered with cans of soup and canned vegetables. I can’t afford to buy fresh vegetables every couple of days and some vegetables I just can’t stand frozen. The way I see it, at least I am eating my vegetables and I do wash most of them before they go in my belly.

We think good food naturally taste good so that’s never really been a problem. I’m thankful I don’t have to hide vegetables in food to get kiddo and the husband to eat them!

I think I balance good nutrition and good taste pretty well because we are a family that loves our vegetables and fruits. So, I don’t really see that as being a problem. I have switched my white rice for brown and my white pasta for whole grains. I prefer whole grain bread over white so that was not really the problem. I LOVE to eat a low carb diet because that’s when I feel my best. However, I most likely eat more of a low glycemic style diet. I do try to keep my starches  and carbs in moderation.

Lately, I have been failing in that department. My weight is creeping up and recent events have brought back the overeating binge disorder. Today I cut out the caffeine and I am going through the process of eliminating the sugar and bad carbs that I have been consuming lately.

I am finding as a food blogger it has been hard to juggle life , blogging, and recipes that work for the website and the family. I am a creature of habit and we do have quite a few recipes that we eat on a consistent basis. Because we are also limited on income with a food budget, it’s hard for me to break out of routine and buy ingredients to make new recipes, but I am trying. I love this website and put all of my heart in it. I am here to tell you, food blogging is not as easy as it looks. It does take a lot of time and dedication. It’s so much more than cooking , taking photos and then writing a post about it.

Balance. Nutrition and food blogging. I’m trying to find my balance.

  1. I think there are people out there that try to make it all look easy, but few of us buy into it because we struggle with it every day. I am thrilled that Spring has arrived. DH and I already checked into when our local veggie stand is opening, the food is fresher and the prices reasonable. That inspires us to cook more. We also grill more in the warmer weather and you can make things taste pretty good without lots of extra cost to the weight. It is a constant battle. Don’t let anyone fool you. However, we both know we feel better when we are fighting than when we give in.

    1. I am extremely happy for Spring which seems to roll right into Summer since our Winter lasted so long. I can’t wait to get outside and spend time creating a garden. I never had much time in the past because I was so focused on school. Even though I know we are going to move eventually, may as well make the most of it. Plus, hopefully the new owners will appreciate my efforts. I am hoping with fresh foods and no more snow, the good eating and weight loss will come a lot easier.
