Trash to Treasure Garden Update {4}
Here it is. I know I am long overdue but here is July’s update for the Trash to Treasure Garden. We saw a lot of rain up here in the north and while it was good to have those rain days here and there, it wasn’t so good when it rained for days on end. Last week we saw a really bad rain storm that resulted in golf ball size hail. The rain came down really fast and the wind was whipping through my trees. Branches went flying. I had a little laugh as I made a video for Mr. Yum who was away at camp with kiddo. I felt like I was back in Oklahoma in tornado alley.
Here is a video of all the rain damage.
We’ve been able to salvage some zucchini, some tomatoes, cucumbers, some small potatoes, the last of the green beans and the wax beans. I have been sorting through the snap peas but a lot of them are bloated from the rain or dead from being on broken stalks. I am not sure if we are going to be able to salvage much else. There are some wax beans still hanging on. I think a squash. Some cucumbers are trying to survive. Potatoes need to grow a bit more, same for corn. I am not sure the eggplant are going to produce anything. I might get some more carrots. I am hoping for some more tomatoes.
While the garden is not a total loss, we have lost a considerable amount of food. Depending on how the rest of the season goes, we may or may not grow back our $200 spent on getting the garden in order.
Bummer.
I’m so sorry to hear about your garden trouble. It has been such a strange summer weather wise. I hope you at least grow back your investment!

I remember when you drowned out. What a recovery – I’m amazed at how it grew back.

Wow I can’t believe the rain did all that! We started our first garden this year. Ours is a lot smaller than yours but we’ve had a lot of cucumbers!
We are still picking some out here and there so not a total loss.

We’ve had lots of rain here too. It destroyed our local farm’s patty pan squash that I love….hoping that we find it before the summer ends!
Oh no!! I hope you do!

That is too bad but glad to hear it worked out. Looks like you got some yummy veggies!
I’m glad you were able to salvage some of the veggies and fruit! Also, glad yall stayed safe during the hail storm!
Me too!
Sorry about your garden. Love fresh from the garden. So worth the work.
It really is!
That’s really frustrating. I want to plant a garden one of these years but I get worried that something like this will happen.
It is still worth it. We still have a lot of fresh vegetables that are not treated with chemicals. So that in my book is still a success and we will make the money back in food that we spent on soil and seeds.
Oh my goodness I’m sorry that really stinks! We had a loss in our garden as well, apparently some type of fungus attacked our tomato plants and it was almost a complete loss! We have to treat all the soil once I pull everything up as well!
Oh no! My mother swears by good old-fashioned blue Dawn and water. I guess thats what my grandmother and great grandmother did on the farm gardens.
It does look like a Midwest summer storm. That is so sad to see. Hope things perked back up.
It’s so strange to me. I am used to living in OK, tornado alley. It is rare for me to see that in the years I have been up here in MI.
I have another blogger friend who lives in Michigan, that had his pepper crop just pelted. Some he was able to salvage, the rest was lost to hail damage. 🙁
Thats awful. My peppers are little sprouts. I think they drowned in the first rain storm and now there hasn’t been enough sun to get them to grow up.
What a crazy storm, and the amount of damage received is crazy! It’s so disappointing that a lot of the garden was ruined and not salvageable. 🙁
It really is. This has been a very rainy summer. I can’t even keep up with the pool it has been raining so much. We haven’t been able to swim. I shock it after it rains and then it rains the next day.
Looks like you have a fantastic haul there! WOW! Great job
Thank you.
Sorry to hear about the damaged harvest. It sounds like a total bummer. I wish I would have planted a garden at all though.
It is a bummer but I am still thankful for what food we were able to get. I still think we will have some growth with a few things like the carrots, corn and eggplant. Oh and the zucchini. So I am pretty sure we will grow our money back that we spent.
I remember you posting about your garden getting rained out. Glad you were able to salvage some items!
I’m so sorry to hear that so much of your hard work has been destroyed by the rains. I always try to stay positive, so at least it was a good experience for you and your children and your did get some food out of it!
Oh wow. So sorry. Here’s hoping the weather cooperates and you get a plentiful crop!
Wow, how frustrating. Praying for agreeable weather :-/
I am glad you were able to salvage some things from the garden. I’m sorry about your loss. Rain can do so much damage.
That must have been very frustrating. Fresh veggies and fruits are my favorite!
On the brights side some delicious and beautiful looking vegies did grow. There is always next year that could produce more than this year and make up for it!
Very true!
our garden was a miserable failure this year. It is so sad when it doesn’t do as well as you planned.
I was really bummed out. But today we pulled out a lot of potatoes, I see the corn is still going, the eggplant is trying, my squash has new growth and the snap peas have a few new growths. I just wish it would stop raining!
You have totally inspired me to start a garden again! Thanks for a great post!
The weather has been insane this year! Glad you were able to salvage your garden
