Work at Your Desk all Day? Get Standing!

Work at Your Desk all Day- Get Standing! | Nevermore Lane
The average American sits for 13 hours a day. Can you believe that? I am no stranger to the need of getting up and getting moving.

I know I sure can because I am guilty of that. Granted, some days I sit less than this, but since I started working from home I have fallen into that trap of sitting way too much. And by way too much I honestly mean, waaaaay too much.

Sad thing is, some people sit longer than that. If you factor in sitting in transportation to get to work, sitting at their work desk and then they go home to sit at the dinner table and/or sit in front of their television or the computer. The end result is a rise is illnesses such as obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, back and posture problems, wrist pain etc.

For me, the end result was a body riddled with pain due to degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, and now a crooked right shoulder which causes a ton of issues on my now crooked body.

Being more active is key to health. A standing desk can help you burn more calories, improve your posture and health.  Moving around is also important and some have installed treadmills to walk while they work.  The goal is to make sure they get at least the recommended 10,000 steps per day and burn calories.  On a treadmill at an easy pace of 1.5-1.8 mph this can easily be accomplished.

How cool is that? I’ve been checking out various standing desk options. I plan to put some sort of standing option in my home. Let me share with you a few of the healthy options I’ve been peaking at.

I always find fun stuff at Overstock. What I like about this desk is that it has an easy crank and it’s on wheels. That means it’s perfect for someone like me who goes from room to room with a laptop and my camera.

This option is a sleek black. It is not adjustable, but the price is good for a stand up desk that provides ample space and it moves where you need it to go.

Overstock and I should be BFFs. Seriously. This one is almost my favorite. I love the sleek design and extra space for my notebooks and planners. Even though this isn’t on wheels, I am pretty sure I could change those out. Total DYI here 😉 I’m sure though, for as lightweight is this is, I could easily move it.

Go Now Fitness – Go Treadmill Desk – $349.99, 50.00 shipping – Available at Amazon.com Marketplace

If you already have a treadmill (I do, I do!) then this option might be better for you. This desk attaches right to your treadmill.

I put this bad boy on my Wish List.

Then I found this easy DIY on Pinterest.

I see a project in my future. It just so happens I need to move the treadmill to set up my food photography ‘studio’ because I am tired of using the kitchen table. The treadmill is right in front of the bay window where all this wonderful natural light comes in.

I can put the treadmill in my office. Win-win. I can walk a little bit at a time and build up my endurance. I can save the easier tasks for the treadmill. I have a desktop and a laptop so…yah!

So what do you think; does a treadmill desk or standing desk interest you?

  1. I need that DIY treadmill desk! I like to read while on the treadmill (walking, not running!!) and my treadmill doesn’t have a spot to lay my book. I’d watch movies or something if I had a spot to put my laptop.

  2. I wish they had that treadmill desk option at work! I think it would be a good idea because employees will be able to exercise more, and stay healthy. With that being said, then, there would be less employees filing for sick days.

  3. Standing while working at your desk is something that a lot of people are doing now days and it is a very good thing to do in my opinion. I love the idea of the DIY treadmill desk which is just as good as the others.

  4. A desk treatmill would be fabulous, if I could do two things at once without tripping over my own feet. I would love to get a crank up adjustable desk though as I do have to stand a lot to word because of where my back injuries are. Sitting can be quite painful.

  5. These are all great! I’m at the computer a lot with my blogging. I need a treadmill desk! I’ve always wanted something like that for when I’m on the treadmill. It gets boring working out and not having something to look at.

  6. I could certainly use one. Sitting in front of the computer for long periods of time can be so tiring. Exercising and doing your tasks at the same time = awesome!

    1. I really want to make a tray for my treadmill so I can use my laptop and walk. Even if I have to walk slow, its still moving.

    1. I don’t think I can get a lot of typing done, but it sure would help with sorting through emails and taking care of smaller tasks that eat up my day.

  7. Wow, that is such a great invention and would help so many that are stuck at the desk all day. How brilliant.

  8. I love the idea of working out together with work but a treadmill desk? I’m quite skeptical about it. Wouldn’t it be hard to concentrate? Anyway, I would much prefer the desk stand. That’s why whenever I do work in coffee shops, I usually use the high tables near the glassed windows. I can choose to stand or sit when doing my work.
