The Harlot of St. Cecelia’s Book Review: A Library Mystery Worth Staying Up For
There is something about a mystery set around books that makes me want to put the kettle on immediately. Give me a library, a suspicious encounter, and secrets tucked behind respectable faces, and my evening plans practically make themselves.
Darcy Graves’s The Harlot of St. Cecelia’s caught my attention with that irresistible combination. I love discovering authors whose stories evoke the appeal of Agatha Christie, especially when the setting offers somewhere wonderfully bookish to disappear.
This one did not disappoint. With my cup of tea beside me, I kept turning pages through the night. It was exactly the kind of reading escape I love sharing here at Nevermore Lane.
The Harlot of St. Cecelia’s: Murder in a London Library
The story begins in London in 1923, where American expatriate librarian Eden Brior finds herself accidentally locked inside the St. Cecelia’s Library vault overnight with charming, unreliable Simon Cross.
An awkward situation becomes considerably darker when they emerge to discover his estranged wife, a celebrated French actress, dead upstairs.
That opening drew me in immediately. A library usually promises quiet refuge, which makes its transformation into a murder scene especially enticing. Suddenly, familiar shelves feel like witnesses keeping their own counsel.
Eden Brior and Inspector Garrett’s Competing Curiosity
Detective Inspector William Garrett approaches the investigation with methodical confidence. He believes he has a likely culprit and would prefer Eden to leave the detecting to him.
Eden, however, is not prepared to retreat into a book while unanswered questions remain. Her determination gives the premise an appealing tension between professional authority and personal curiosity.
I am drawn to stories where someone refuses to accept the easiest explanation. Eden’s involvement adds another reason to keep reading, beyond simply wanting a name attached to the crime.
Jazz Age London and Golden Age Mystery Appeal
The investigation moves beyond the library into London’s theatrical world and the drawing rooms of Jazz Age society. Glamour provides the backdrop, but secrets complicate the picture.
That contrast is part of what appeals to me about this story. Beautiful surroundings do not guarantee beautiful intentions, and polished manners can make suspicion feel even more delicious.
For my Christie loving heart, the attraction lies in that invitation to look closer. Every conversation becomes something to consider, rather than merely a bridge to the next dramatic event.
A Bookish Mystery for Tea Filled Evenings
What stayed with me most was the pleasure of wanting another chapter. My tea accompanied the reading, but the book supplied the reason to postpone bedtime.
Its library setting also made this an especially natural fit for my reading tastes. Books about bookish places already have a small advantage with me.
Here, that familiar comfort meets an unsettling mystery. The magic is in the reading ritual: warm tea, a quiet room, and curiosity that keeps sleep waiting.

Synopsis:

An Inspector Garrett Mystery
London, 1923. American expat librarian Eden Brior thinks things are bad when she is accidentally locked overnight in the St. Cecelia’s Library vault with the charming and unreliable Simon Cross. Then she emerges to find the body of his estranged wife — a celebrated French actress — draped over a chair upstairs.
Detective Inspector William Garrett is methodical, quietly perceptive, and already fairly certain he has his man. He tells Eden firmly to go home and leave the detecting to the professionals. But how can she?
Racing to clear their names before Garrett closes the case, Eden follows the truth from the bright footlights of the London stage through the sleek drawing rooms of Jazz Age society, and into secrets that someone will kill to keep buried.
Steeped in the style of the golden age of detective fiction, The Harlot of St. Cecelia’s captures a London still glittering on the surface and shadowed underneath — where every drawing room hides a secret and every secret has a price.
Perfect for fans of Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series.
Praise for The Harlot of St. Cecelia’s:
“This novel consistently delights, from the spicy title to the last page.”
