How Can You Build A Healthy Lifestyle That Lasts?

Most people have probably started some kind of health kick at one point or another – maybe it was a new exercise plan, a strict diet, an ambitious set of goals, or a promise that this time things would be different (who hasn’t been there?). And although that’s all good, the problem is that a lot of healthy habits start with loads of enthusiasm and then gradually disappear once real life gets in the way.

The fact is that building a healthy lifestyle isn’t usually about doing everything perfectly for a few weeks – it’s about finding things you can realistically stick with for months and years without feeling miserable in the process. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more.

Start Smaller Than You Think You Need To

One thing that catches people out is trying to change everything at once – suddenly they’re exercising every day, cooking every meal from scratch, drinking more water, sleeping earlier, cutting out treats, and tracking every possible statistic… And that’s a lot to contend with. It’s probably too much.

The reality is that making one or two smaller changes is often much easier than trying to completely overhaul your life overnight, so adding in a short daily walk, an extra portion of vegetables, or going to bed a little earlier might be exactly the way to get started because those habits are easier to keep going since they don’t feel too difficult or unpleasant.

Stop Looking For Perfect

The problem with perfection is that it’s very difficult to maintain, especially because life gets busy, people get ill, plans change, work becomes stressful, holidays happen… Basically, you’re living a normal life.

So if you’ve added a load of healthy habits that depend on everything going perfectly, then as soon as things aren’t going perfectly, you’ll stop those healthy habits – it makes sense. But don’t worry because perfection isn’t needed, and what you actually want is consistency, which means that missing or changing one thing once in a while really isn’t going to hurt.

Find Things You Actually Enjoy

This sounds obvious, but it’s surprising how often people choose forms of exercise they hate just because they think they should enjoy them but think about this – if you dread every workout, there’s a good chance you’re not going to keep doing it forever. The same applies to food. Healthy eating tends to feel much more sustainable when it includes meals you genuinely look forward to rather than things you force yourself to eat.

So in the end, the goal isn’t to create a lifestyle that looks healthy from the outside, it’s to create one that actually works for you, which means you need to like doing it.

Use Numbers Carefully

There are plenty of ways to measure progress these days, including steps, calories, workout data, sleep scores, and things like body mass index can all provide useful information, and the important thing is remembering that they’re tools to use more than anything else.

Numbers can sometimes help people understand where they’re starting and track progress over time, but they don’t tell the whole story on their own, and how you feel, how much energy you have, and whether your habits are becoming easier to maintain are important as well. It all has to work together.
