Starting Your Journey on a GLP-1? Here Are 18 Books I Recommend

The first vial of compounded semaglutide in hand, suddenly it hits me really hard. This tiny vial held the medication everyone talks about for weight loss. Yet nobody prepared me for what actually happens next when switching from trizepatide (Zepbound) to semaglutide. For me personally, it felt like a step down. I am no stranger to this med, I actually tried Wegovy first about a year or so before trying Zepbound. At that time, my insurance did not cover these meds, and there were only so many samples available for me. After a month it did not seem like it was worth the journey, so I made the choice to not stay on the medication. Telehealth and compound pharmacies were not pushing ads in your face every 2 seconds like they are now, but budget wise, that just would not have been in the cards for me anyway.

My Dr. is amazing. She did her best to keep me on the medication. I’ll opt for a sleep test, just to see if sleep apnea is a thing and I can stay on prescription Zepbound, but until then, it’s semaglutide for me so that I am not completely off a GLP-1. Unfortunately, my insurance is no longer covering GLP-1 medications unless they have one of the listed ailments – one happens to be FDA approved for use, sleep apnea. 

When I started Zepbound, the online forums overflowed with contradictory advice and horror stories. The realization arrived that starting GLP-1 medications means navigating a complex journey that goes far beyond simply injecting once weekly and watching pounds disappear magically.

Knowledge became my lifeline when the medication started working but side effects arrived uninvited. Thankfully, I was one of the lucky ones that my side effects were minimal.  Understanding how GLP-1 medications actually function in the body transformed abstract prescriptions into tools I could use effectively. Reading about nutrition strategies specific to these medications prevented some of the worst side effects others experienced. Learning the science behind hunger hormones and metabolic changes helped set realistic expectations rather than buying into miracle drug fantasies. Each book added another piece to the puzzle of using semaglutide successfully as part of a holistic approach to sustainable weight loss.

Starting this journey without education feels like driving blindfolded and hoping for the best. The medication works powerfully yet demands informed partnership rather than passive consumption. Bodies respond differently. Side effects vary wildly. What works perfectly for one person creates misery for another. Reading extensively before and during the GLP-1 journey creates the foundation for making smart decisions about dosing, nutrition, exercise, and managing the mental and emotional shifts that accompany rapid weight changes. These books became my guides through territory that medical appointments alone could never adequately map.

And now that I am switching from one to the other, many of these books I will revisit to make sure I am optimizing semaglutide to the best of my ability.

The GLP-1 journey transforms dramatically when approached with education rather than blind hope. These books provided frameworks that doctor’s appointments couldn’t cover in fifteen-minute visits.
